Review : PK – Interesting, Entertaining and Thought Provoking

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and National Award winning director Rajkumar Hirani gave us the memorable ‘3 Idiots’ in 2009. After a gap of five years, they are back again with ‘PK’ and the movie has released today across the world. Aamir Khan’s look and presentation in the teasers created a lot of debate and some even wrote off the film. But Aamir and Rajkumar Hirani are not to be taken lightly. With PK, they have another winner up their sleeves. This is our review of the film.

Story :

We come into this world naked. Without prejudice. Without the burden of religion. Without hatred in our hearts. Without any agendas.

PK (Aamir Khan) is an extraterrestrial being who comes into this world in a similar fashion. He has a lot of innocent but deep questions about the functioning of this world, just like kids do. This gets him into some pretty uncomfortable and comical (for viewers) situations.

PK’s race, though human like in every other way, has the ability to read minds. With this ability, PK sets about learning the ways of the human race. He befriends TV reporter Jaggu (Anushka Sharma), who realises that some of the questions posed by PK about religion have the ability to benefit human society.

PK and Jaggu challenge Godmen, religious rituals and superstitions, winning over an entire nation in the process.

Plus Points :

- Aamir Khan shows why he is rated as one of India’s best actors with a top notch performance in PK. He brings about a childlike innocence into the character and he is the biggest pillar of strength for the movie. Without a doubt, this is one of his finest performances. His expressions and mannerisms are a major highlight for the movie.

- Anushka Sharma looks good as TV reporter Jaggu. She has played her role well and she shares good chemistry with Aamir. Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani are good, in small but important roles. Saurab Shukla plays the role of a haughty Godman very convincingly.

- PK has a killer first half. It is laced with entertainment and Rajkumar Hirani narrates this interesting story with great conviction. Viewers get drawn into the story within the first 15 minutes itself and end up rooting for PK’s character throughout the film.

- Some of the issues raised in the film are deep and thought provoking. After the laughter dies down and you walk out of the theater, you will probably ask yourself some of the questions posed by PK. This is a movie that will stay with you for a while.

Minus Points :

- Though fresh and well presented, the second half of PK is not as good as the first half. There are a few overly melodramatic moments and cliched scenes in the second half of the film. Rajkumar Hirani’s mark, which is so strongly visible in the first half, is not to be found in the second half.

- Some of the scenes will remind you of ‘Oh My God’. The whole Alien landing episode and the ‘remote control’ concept are too superficial.

- The romantic track between Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput could have been handled in a better manner. The way in which the two of them are re-united is quite bad.

The finer Things :

C.K. Muraleedharan’s cinematography is really good. Rajkumar Hirani’s editing in the first half is pretty spot on. But some of the scenes could have used a bit of trimming in the second half. As for the direction, Rajkumar Hirani deserves good marks for his handling of the film. This is not his best work, But it is pretty good.

Background music and songs work well for the movie.

Verdict :

PK is an interesting, entertaining and thought provoking movie that you can watch with your entire family this weekend. Aamir Khan’s phenomenal performance in the lead role, a superb first half and feel good factor more than offset a slightly slow and melodramatic second half. This is not Rajkumar Hirani’s best work, but it is still very good. Don’t miss it.

Critic’s Rating – 3.5 /5

BOX OFFICE POTENTIAL : Very High
