Review : Srimanthudu - Rich in Content and Emotions

Review : Srimanthudu - Rich in Content and Emotions

Mahesh Babu has teamed up with Koratala Shiva for the action entertainer Srimanthudu. The movie has Shruti Haasan in the lead role and Mythri Movie Makers banner has produced it. The film has released across the world in a big way today and this is our review of the film.

Story :

Harsha (Mahesh Babu) is the reluctant heir to a legacy worth billions. He is the son of industrialist Ravikanth (Jagapathi Babu) but the rich trappings do not attract him. Instead, he is more keen about the welfare of people around him. This creates a little friction in the family .

A chance encounter with Charuseela (Shruti Haasan) brings about a welcome change in Harsha's life and he falls in love with her. Charuseela exposes Harsha to the concept of Rural Development and he takes it up with great passion.

Just when things seem perfect, Harsh comes to know about the history of his family and the terrible conditions prevailing in his native village. He decides to adopt the village and improve the quality of life of his people.

Will he be allowed to complete his work by crooked politicians and evil local strongmen? That is the story of Srimanthudu.

Plus Points :

- Mahesh Babu is outstanding in the role of Harsha. He brought great intensity and authenticity to the role. Stunning good looks and a superlative performance are added bonuses.

- Shruti Haasan looks gorgeous in the film and she makes for a great leading lady opposite Mahesh. Rajendra Prasad and Jagapathi Babu show their class in vital roles.

- The second half of the film has been handled very well . You have many scenes that will stir strong emotions in your heart, especially if you have a rural connection.

- The philosophy of a vasudaika kutumbam has been showcased very well in the movie, without being preachy. The hero, producers and the director must be appreciated for taking up a subject like this.

Minus Points :

- The pace of the film is a little slow, especially in the first half. While this many not pose any problems in multiplexes and overseas areas, it may prove to be a dampener for mass crowds in smaller towns and cities

- The film is quite long and with the intermission, it can stretch to almost three hours. The first half could have been trimmed by about 10-15 minutes easily.

- The rivalry between the villains and the hero could have been developed and elevated further . This track is almost linear and one sided. The scenes where Mahesh influences the family members of Mukesh Rishi in Delhi are too unrealistic.

Technical Aspects :

Devi Sri Prasad's background music is very good in the film and he has elevated the emotional quotient of key scenes with his work. Editing could have been a lot sharper. Transition between scenes is not too good.

Koratala Shiva is a very good writer and that quality shines through in this movie. He has also evolved as a director from his 'Mirchi' days. Koratala Shiva has also balanced philosophy and commercial sensibilities very well.

Verdict :

'Srimanthudu' is a rare kind of film that has good content despite having a top star in the lead role. In an age where formulaic screenplay, comedy and a few fights are being packaged and marketed as commercial cinema, Srimanthudu comes across as a breath of fresh air. It has its faults, but as a whole, the film just works very well.
